Overview
PhD students are an integral part of the academic life of Maynooth University Department of Economics. We aim to deliver high-quality supervision and to produce research of international quality.
Advantages of undertaking a PhD in Economics at Maynooth University:
You will be a member of a small but highly research active department. You will be integrated into the life of the department in a way that may not be possible in larger departments.
You will work with a supervisory team. This gives you access to multiple sources of expertise and provides added reassurance as to the quality of your research.
Maynooth University is a member of the Dublin Region Higher Education Alliance (DRHEA), along with University College Dublin (UCD) and Trinity College Dublin (TCD). This provides additional opportunities for taught coursework, which will strengthen your training in Economics. It also gives you access to a larger network of academics and fellow Economics PhD students with whom to discuss your research.
Maynooth University is a member of Arqus, an alliance of nine European universities located in Austria, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal and Spain. This provides ease of access to international exchange visits that will enhance your research and subsequent employability.
You will be undertaking your PhD at an English-speaking department. Since English is the language of Economics, this will give you an advantage in publishing your research.
Scholarships
Please note that the Department of Economics does not offer PhD scholarships. However, candidates who wish to do a PhD in Economics in Maynooth University can apply for a John & Pat Hume Doctoral Scholarship Award and/or a Hume Doctoral Prize (Tuition Bursary). These are offered across all disciplines at Maynooth University and are allocated on a competitive basis.

Course structure
Duration: 4 years full-time, 6 years part-time
The first year of the PhD programme is typically dominated by taught coursework; taught coursework may continue into second year, and sometimes beyond, depending on the evolution of your research. By the end of the first year, you will be expected to have developed a thesis proposal and to have made some progress on a first thesis chapter. In subsequent years, you will refine this chapter and begin work on the remaining two thesis chapters.
Taught Coursework
All MU PhD students must take at least 30 credits of taught coursework during their PhD, of which at least 15 credits must be subject-specific and at least 15 credits must be in transferrable skills (such as research funding applications, grant management, and employability and research ethics).
Relevant subject-specific modules for our PhD in Economics include both core economics modules and specialist field modules. These modules can be taken from our MSc Economics programme in Maynooth University or from our DRHEA partners in UCD and/or TCD or our Arqus partners abroad. Transferable skills modules are taken in Maynooth University.
In the case that your Master's degree does not contain the full breadth of core economics modules, you will be asked to take core economics modules offered in our MSc Economics or from our DRHEA partners in UCD and/or TCD or our Arqus Partners abroad.
The remaining modules are chosen in consultation with the primary supervisor. You are expected to achieve a passable standard in each of the taught modules.
Progression
Beyond first year, progression from year to year will depend on having satisfied the department that sufficient progress has been made on the thesis and on the relevant coursework. This decision will be made based on an annual seminar presentation to all members of department, in conjunction with the supervisory team.

However, while evidence of high ability is a necessary condition for acceptance onto our PhD programme, it is not sufficient. We must also be convinced that we can supervise you effectively. The PhD coordinator will manage the process of matching you with a potential primary supervisor. If no suitable supervisor can be found, we will not be able to accept you to our programme.
Minimum English language requirements:
Applicants for whom English is not their first language are required to demonstrate their proficiency in English in order to benefit fully from their course of study. How to apply
Please contact the departmental PhD Coordinator or programme director (see details below).
Please attach your university transcripts to your email. If you already have a clear idea of the research area you would like to pursue, please indicate this in your message. You are also encouraged to include a research proposal, if available. In addition, if you are particularly interested in working with a specific member of our department, please mention this in your email.
Please note that PhD admission at MU requires you to submit a research proposal that members of our department are willing to supervise. However, we are willing to work with excellent potential applicants who do not yet have a well-developed research idea or a specific member of our department with whom they would like to work.
Please do not contact any member of department other than the departmental PhD Coordinator. The PhD Coordinator will check your eligibility for entry to our PhD programme and, if so, will advise on matching you with one or more potential supervisors.
Once the departmental PhD Coordinator is satisfied with your application – comprising both your transcripts and your research proposal – you will be asked to enter the details on the university’s application website in order to facilitate the university’s registration process. Please do not make a formal application until the departmental PhD Coordinator has asked you to.
