Overview

This Certificate level course is offered by the Department of Modern History, Maynooth University. The course examines the ‘local dimension of Ireland’s past’.

Course Aims The course aims to provide participants interested in local history with an opportunity to obtain formal training in the subject. This course sets out to provide students with a methodological approach to the research and writing of local history.


Course structure

Duration: 100 hours part-time over one year.

Content

Module 1

An introduction to academic and community-based local history in Ireland; Comparative traditions in other countries; Contemporary developments and challenges in the field of local history

Module 2

Introduction to primary and secondary sources; Guidelines for critical appraisal of sources;

Guidance on location and consultation of selected major sources

Module 3

Presenting Local History: Writing conventions; Oral/visual presentations; Fieldwork

Participants need to be 21 years of age or over on 1st January of the year in which the course commences. As courses are delivered in keeping with adult education practice, participants will be expected to: be willing to engage with group activities and group learning; be willing to learn through dialogue and reflection on experience; have a level of literacy that is sufficient to complete the assessment requirements.

Applications for this course are approved by the Department of Modern History, Maynooth University. Participants are required to hold an interest in local history together with an indication of capacity for the course.
