MH201 - Data Science
Go to Course - Bachelor Of ScienceData Science cannot be combined with Mathematical Physics. Students taking Data Science in first year can follow on with Statistics in second year. However, Data Science in first year is not a requirement for taking Statistics in second year.
Overview
Data science is the science of collating, managing, analysing, visualising and understanding data.
It’s key to unlocking the hidden wisdom within the huge volumes of data surrounding us today.
A solid foundation for all sciences
In the Bachelor of Science degree (MH201) at Maynooth University, you can study data science as a subject in first year. This introduces you to the basics of how to manipulate, visualise and bring large volumes of data to life.
The hands-on data experience you’ll gain in first year will be invaluable no matter what scientific path you follow.
From life sciences, like biology; and physical sciences, like experimental physics; to more quantitative sciences, like statistics – your data science knowledge will be an asset.
Statistics and data science
If you’re considering taking statistics to degree level (available in MH201 from second year), we highly recommend taking data science in first year. Doing this lets you try out the practical side of analysing and visualising data.
Taking statistics from second year then gives you a deeper understanding of modelling and analysis techniques.
Computer science and data science
Are you choosing computer science in first year and considering taking it through to degree level? You’ll find that first year data science and first year computer science go hand in hand.
This combination mixes the practical side of working with data, covered in first year data science, with the programming and database skills taught in first year computer science.
Subject Structure
First year
- In the BSc programme, you take Mathematics and Data Science with two other subjects (except Mathematical Physics)
Second year
- Data Science is a first year subject only, but in second year, students can take Mathematics, either of their other first subjects or Statistics (which begins as a subject in second year). Students who enjoyed and excelled in Data Science in first year are recommended to take Statistics and Mathematics in second year.
Or
MH207 BSc Data Science
- Students who have taken Mathematics, Data Science and Computer Science in year 1 may be considered for transfer entry into year 2 of MH207 BSc Data Science (subject to entry requirements) – see MH207 Data Science
