MH201 - Statistics
Go to Course - Bachelor Of ScienceStatistics may not be taken with Mathematical Physics in any year, or with Chemistry in third and fourth year. Students taking Statistics must also take Mathematics in second year.
Statistics can be, but does not have to be, combined with Mathematics in third and fourth year.
Overview
Statistics involves the collection, analysis and interpretation of data.
A degree in statistics gives you the tools to tackle some of the biggest challenges humans face today. These range from climate change to biodiversity loss, drone analytics, and even designing medical products.
What you’ll learn
At Maynooth University, you’ll learn how to use statistical models and visualisation methods. These methods let you unlock valuable information and the hidden patterns within large volumes of data.
A flexible degree
Statistics is available as a subject from second to fourth year. If you’re interested in statistics, we recommend that you take data science as a subject in first year.
Statistics is offered as a Double Major within the Bachelor of Science (MH201) degree, giving you the freedom to pair it with other subjects you like.¿This flexibility lets you explore more of your scientific interests alongside statistics.
Subject Structure
Statistics begins as a subject in 2nd year.
In first year of the BSc Double Major programme, you take Mathematics with two or three other subjects. Students interested in Statistics from second year are strongly recommended to take Data Science as one of their subjects in first year.
Second year
- In the BSc Double Major programme, you take Statistics, Mathematics and one other subject.
- Optional 10 credit Elective in second year.
- Statistics cannot be combined with Mathematical Physics in second year.
Third year
- Statistics is taken in third year along with 1 of your second year subjects; the second subject can be, but does not have to be, Mathematics (Applied or Pure). Statistics cannot be combined with Mathematical Physics or Chemistry in third year.
Fourth year
- Statistics is available as a Double Major. Statistics can be combined with all other subjects except Mathematical Physics or Chemistry in fourth year.

Careers
Complex and voluminous data arises in all aspects of science. The ability to transform data into usable scientific knowledge is a highly sought after and desirable skill in today’s workforce and in almost all scientific research areas. Studying Statistics through to degree level, or for a portion of the degree, will strongly enhance your employability and skill et as a scientist.
Critical thinking, an ability to analyse big data and being adaptable to various work environments are among the strong skills and traits of statistics graduates.
Graduates have a range of career options open to them, including employment in:
- the civil service
- industry and business
- scientific research
- medical research
- environmental research
- financial services and actuarial roles
