MH201 - Computer Science

Go to Course - Bachelor Of Science

Students taking Computer Science in second year must also take Mathematics.

Students intending to take Computer Science as a Single Major degree must take Mathematics (Pure) or Mathematics (Applied) in third year.

Overview

Interested in software, how computer systems work and how we use them? Then computer science at Maynooth University could be the ideal choice for you.

In first year, you’ll find studying computer science alongside other arts (MH101) subjects particularly beneficial.

This subject combination gives you a broader perspective and more options for your academic direction after first year.

Depending on which pathway you’ll follow, you can study advanced topics like:

  • computer vision
  • theoretical computer science
  • robotics
  • cryptography
  • artificial intelligence

Lectures and lab work

Founded in 1987, the Department of Computer Science is located in the Eolas Building, our information and communication technology hub.

All our courses include a stimulating mix of lectures and laboratory work. Our laboratories and equipment provide excellent facilities for your practical work.

Support to help you thrive

You can expect a supportive and enjoyable atmosphere for learning through our Computer Science Centre, which provides a free tutoring service to students.

We provide lots of assistance during your practical work and we’re also on hand to help you outside of lectures.

Be sure to get involved in the many extracurricular opportunities we run throughout the year too.

Subject Structure

First year

  • Either 15 or 30 credits of Computer Science is taken with Mathematics
  • Plus choose 1 or 2 other Science subjects - Biology or Engineering Science, Chemistry, Data Science, Experimental Physics, Mathematical Physics

Second year

  • Computer Science, Mathematics (Mathematics must be taken with Computer Science in second year)
  • Continue with 1 of your first year subjects
  • Optional 10 credit Elective

Or

  • There is a transfer pathway from first year MH201 Science to second year of new degree MH604. Students must have successfully completed first year having taken 22.5 credits of Computer Science (including CS192), Mathematics plus one other available subject. Transfer to MH604 is dependent on availability of a place and also on first year grades.

Third year

  • Computer Science
  • Plus continue with 1 other subject from second year
  • Integrated Study Abroad options may be available in third year

Fourth year

  • Computer Science may be taken as a Single Major or as a Double Major with the other third year subject

Students intending to take a Single Major degree must take Mathematics (Pure) or Mathematics (Applied) in third year.

Please note:

See MH201 COURSE STRUCTURE overview for any specific subject combination limits/requirements in the BSc degree.
