Finance is the study of investment risk and reward. It’s a stimulating and challenging subject that offers a host of exciting careers across the financial industry.

What you’ll learn

During your studies, you’ll learn to examine the role of government and international organisations in the management and regulation of financial markets.

You’ll learn practical skills you can use in real-world situations – from helping entrepreneurs fund new ideas to understanding how investors grow their money, how banks create financial products, and how people and companies finance their everyday needs.

You’ll also gain hands-on experience using industry-standard financial applications like Bloomberg.

Subject Structure

First year

  • 15 credits of Finance
  • Choose up to 3 other subjects, which may include Critical Skills, from the 5 groups available (maximum 1 subject per group – see groups table)

Second year and Final year

  • After first year you can take Finance in a Double Major or as a Minor with one of your other first year subjects.

Or

  • You may transfer into MH402 BSc Quantitative Finance degree - if you successfully complete first year and attain 60% in Economics or Finance, Mathematics and Computer Science.
  • You may transfer into MH403 BA Accounting and Finance if you pass Economics or Finance, and achieve an average of 60% in the 30 credit Accounting subject
  • You may transfer into MH410 BBS/BBA Finance degree if you successfully complete first year achieving at least 50% in Economics or Finance, and pass 15 credits of Business (any of the three in Group 2).
  • You may transfer into MH415 BSc Economics degree if you attain 60% in Economics or Finance, and 60% in Mathematical Studies
  • You may transfer into MH416 BA International Economics degree if you attain 50% in Economics or Finance, and pass 15 credits in Mathematics and another subject from Chinese Studies, French, German, Spanish or Computer Science

MH101:

  • Optional 10 credit Elective in second year
  • Optional Erasmus/Study Abroad after second year

Entry requirements

Leaving Certificate applicants are required to present (as a minimum): 2H5 & 4O6/H7 and O6/H7 in Irish, English, 3rd language. O4/H7 Mathematics recommended.
