History explores how societies came to be, from as many perspectives as possible. It’s the story of people and how their experiences over time shaped the world we live in today.

We provide a solid foundation in the practice of history and boast expertise in many specialist topics, such as:

  • life in medieval Ireland
  • the intersection of European and world history
  • military history and war studies
  • country houses and estates
  • gender and sexual politics
  • art history

With broad options to spark every student’s curiosity, anyone with a real interest in the past will find our programme deeply rewarding.


Subject Structure

First year

  • Take either 15 or 30 credits of History
  • Choose 2 or 3 other subjects, which may include Critical Skills, from the available groups (maximum 1 subject per group – see groups table)

Second year and Final year

  • Continue with History and 1 other first year subject
  • Students who pass either 15 or 30 credits of History in first year may take History as part of a Double Major, a Major/Minor or a Minor from second year
  • Optional 10 credit dissertation in final year, based on your own research

Or

  • Single Major History from second year - students who achieve 50% or more in either the 15 or 30 credits of first year History may transfer to the Single Major in History from second year
  • At least 50 credits of History in each year

MH101:

  • Optional 10 credit Elective in second year
  • Optional Erasmus/Study Abroad after second year

Leaving Certificate Applicants

Required to present (as a minimum): 2H5 & 4O6/H7 and O6/H7 in Irish, English, 3rd language. Round 1 points 2026: see above

HEAR and DARE

DARE: The Disability Access Route to Education is a third level alternative admissions scheme for school-leavers whose disabilities have had a negative impact on their second level education.
