Accounting is the language of business. When you study accounting at Maynooth University, you build practical financial skills that are relevant and transferrable across a host of careers.
No prior knowledge is needed to study accounting with us. Our expert, engaging and supportive faculty teach accounting from first principles, helping you build your foundation knowledge.
Flexibility across degrees
You can study accounting through the Bachelor of Arts (MH101) degree or, having completed the first year of MH101, transfer into one of our specialised accounting programmes:
- BA Accounting and Finance
- BBS Business and Accounting
- BBA Business and Languages
- BCL Law and Accounting
Exam exemption
To become a professional accountant, you need to successfully complete 3 levels of professional exams, in addition to ‘on the job’ training.
Our specialised degrees have full Chartered Accountant Proficiency 1 (CAP 1) exemptions. If you are a student of these degrees, you are exempt from the first level of professional exams.

Subject Structure
First year
- Students are introduced to the fundamentals of accounting in year 1
- There is an option to take Accounting as a double subject where students take additional accounting/finance related modules. 22.5 of the credits are in Group 6 (7.5 credits in semester 1, and 15 in semester 2). The other 7.5 credits in semester 1 is a choice between a Business Management Module (MN157 - Professional and Learning Skills) in Group 2, or a Universal Critical Skills SK1057 course which is available in every group (as part of our Critical Skills)
- Choose 2 or 3 other subjects, which may include Critical Skills, from the available groups (maximum 1 subject per group)
Second year and Final year
- Take Accounting and one other subject to degree level (as a Double Major)
Or
- Apply to transfer into one of our specialised degrees in Accounting having achieved 60% or more in 30 credits of 1st year Accounting (MH403/MH407/MH409/MH502 LWA – subject to conditions being met.
MH101:
- Optional 10 credit Elective in second year
- Optional Erasmus/Study Abroad after second year

Entry requirements
Leaving Certificate applicants are required to present (as a minimum): 2H5 & 4O6/H7 and O6/H7 in Irish, English, 3rd language. O4/H7 Mathematics recommended.
