Overview

Sociology is the study of human social life – how we live together, how society and its structures shape us, and how we can shape society in return.

Studying sociology at Maynooth University will open your mind and connect your own lived experience to a wider social and economic context. Making these connections encourages a confident, empowering style of student-led learning.

Through sociology you’ll become a creative thinker and take part in a constructive, meaningful discipline focused on equality and social justice.

Learn essential skills

You’ll develop core skills that help you understand today’s rapidly-evolving society.

These skills will also help you contribute to positive social change:

  • critical skills
  • evidence-based powers of argumentation
  • creative thinking
  • intellectual skills
  • research skills
  • communication skills
  • active citizenship skills

Beyond the classroom

You can also expand your horizons by spending a year studying abroad, joining staff-led field trips and becoming actively involved in the Sociology and Politics Society in the Maynooth Students’ Union.

Careers

Studying Sociology opens our students up to personal change and development, and provides them with the necessary tools to successfully pursue diverse professional career paths including:

  • advocacy
  • education
  • public relations
  • political activism
  • journalism
  • probation service
  • social work
  • social care
  • online community management
  • social/market research
  • The Maynooth University Department of Sociology is widely acknowledged as a leading national and international centre of teaching and research excellence, as well as an exemplar of public sociology and engagement. Some Sociology graduates continue in the discipline and undertake doctoral or master’s degree studies so they can pursue careers as:
    • professional sociologists
    • social researchers
    • in-house researchers or analysts in large organisations
    • policy analysts or lecturers in third-level and further education institutions
  • Taking Sociology and/or Politics to degree level meets the Teaching Council degree subject requirement to teach Politics and Society at post-primary level, following a Professional Master of Education (PME).
