Overview

Beginning with words on a page, English takes you across vast historical periods, cultures, locations and genres.

From poetry and drama to the novel, film, and creative writing too, English literature offers you so much choice.

Studying English at Maynooth University is an exciting and rewarding experience.

Throughout your degree, you’ll engage in critical debate about the meaning and value of literature through lectures, tutorials, and seminars.

What you’ll learn

As a student of English, you’ll learn about:

  • different literary forms – poetry, drama, the novel, film, and creative writing
  • the conditions that shape literature – history, geography, gender, race, and class
  • how literary texts help us understand our own complex world

You’ll also explore different ways of studying literature and see how these critical approaches have shaped English literary studies.
