Nua-Ghaeilge in group 3 is only available when choosing Nua-Ghaeilge in group 4 (30 credit double Nua-Ghaeilge).

Overview

Explore the Irish language, literature and culture at Maynooth University – where Irish has been taught for over 200 years.

A H4 grade in Leaving Certificate Irish (or equivalent) is required to study Nua-Ghaeilge. There is no beginner stream available.

Our commitment to Irish and learning

During your Nua-Ghaeilge studies you’ll explore spoken and written Irish, its rich heritage, and the diverse aspects of its literature and culture.

You’ll learn in a friendly, welcoming department with a long tradition of Irish. The Professorship of Irish was established in 1795, just after the founding of the Royal College of St Patrick.

Language immersion and support

All of your lectures, tutorials and workshops are delivered through Irish. You’ll also find support at An Droichead, our peer-to-peer Irish language support centre – particularly useful to first years.

As spoken and written Irish are central to our course, students also spend time in the Gaeltacht to further develop these key skills.

What you’ll learn

Through our modules you’ll gain a deep appreciation of contemporary Irish literature – that’s poetry, prose and drama.

We also offer modules on earlier periods of Irish literature, including:

  • Bardic Poetry
  • the Fenian Cycle
  • poetry of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries

In addition to practical workshops and tutorials on written and spoken Irish, you can also take modules on:

  • Scottish Gaelic
  • the sean-nós singing tradition
  • Irish-language oral traditions and onomastics – the study of proper names
  • the sociolinguistics of Irish
  • the phonology and dialectology of the modern language
