If you’re interested in human behaviour, society and justice, criminology may just be your ideal subject.
What is criminology?
Criminology is the study of crime, criminal behaviour and the criminal justice system. Put simply, it’s the study of the making of laws, the breaking of laws and of society’s reaction to the breaking of laws.

Criminology and MH101
Maynooth University is the only university in the Republic of Ireland that offers criminology through arts.
You can choose criminology in combination with a host of arts subjects, like law, psychological studies and more.
This gives you a broad and rewarding basis during first year.
Transfer option
You can transfer into second year of the BA Criminology degree (MH504) having successfully passed the first year of MH101.
You can also choose to move into a specialised degree after first year.
Subject Structure
First year
- 15 credits of Criminology
- Choose 2 or 3 other subjects, which may include Critical Skills, from the available groups (maximum 1 subject per group – see groups table)
Second year and Final year
- Continue with Criminology as a Double Major, Major/Minor, or as a Minor
- Continue with 1 of your first year subjects
Or
- Transfer opportunity into the MH502 BCL (Law and Criminology) degree for MH101 students who successfully pass 1st year, taking the recommended 30 credits of Law and 15 credits of Criminology.
Or
- Transfer opportunity into the MH504 BA Criminology degree for MH101 students who successfully pass 1st year, taking Criminology as one of their subjects.
MH101:
- Optional 10 credit Elective in second year
- Optional Erasmus/Study Abroad after second year
