When you study international development at Maynooth University, you’ll explore the major development challenges facing the world today.
These range from climate change and war, to technology, inequality and poverty, and their impact on people and the planet.
You’ll examine how development is planned and delivered in a way that meets everyone’s needs – particularly marginalised communities.
Explore global development challenges
You’ll explore how development challenges differ across regions of the world, and why the Global North and South experience them in different ways.
Just some of the issues you’ll examine include:
- global futures
- the media, activism and development alternatives
- conflict, peacemaking and human rights
- migration, diversity and development
- theories of social change
Analyse, act and advocate
You’ll look at how governments, the United Nations, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and businesses work to promote fairness and sustainability, and assess how effective they are.
This programme will empower you to:
- think critically
- advocate for inclusive policies
- act purposefully on development issues
- contribute to solutions that prioritise justice, human rights and sustainability for all
- gain the tools to evaluate development strategies
Subject Structure
First year
- Take either 15 or 30 credits of International Development
- Choose 2 or 3 other subjects, which may include Critical Skills, from the available groups (maximum 1 subject per group – see groups table)
Second year and Final year
Continue with International Development and 1 other first year subject as a Double Major, Major/Minor or as a Minor
MH101:
- Optional 10 credit Elective in second year
- Optional Erasmus/Study Abroad after second year

Entry requirements
Leaving Certificate applicants are required to present (as a minimum): 2H5 & 4O6/H7 and O6/H7 in Irish, English, 3rd language.
Postgraduate
Postgraduate study options include an MA in International Development and an MA in International Peacebuilding, Security and Development Practice.
