Overview

The Return to Learning (RTL) Certificate course is designed as a stepping stone for those who wish to return to learn and study but have not studied in any formal way for a number of years. Participants are given an opportunity to sample a number of academic subjects so that they can make a more informed choice when selecting subjects later. It will include the following modules for students to feel prepared to progress into a Level 8 degree course:

  1. Skills for Learning in Higher Education (including information and Communication Technologies skills) - 5 ECTS
  2. Introduction to Programmes – 10 ECTS (A new module based on Taster lessons from different subjects)
  3. English Literature and Learning - 5 ECTS
  4. Return to Learning - Sociology - 5 ECTS
  5. First Steps to Social Research - 5 ECTS

This one year, part time certificate programme has the following aims:

  • To ensure students become familiar with the requirements of studying at third level
  • To introduce learners to formal and informal supports in higher education setting.
  • To develop effective techniques in study, writing, note-taking, referencing and in basic social research.
  • To support personal development planning through a range of learning styles
  • To support the development of effective and confident communication skills,
  • To increase self-confidence in capacities to progress and participate in university in a non-judgmental, participatory, dialogical manner based on adult education methodologies.

The course aims to familiarise people with the structure and requirements of third level education; to equip them with some of the necessary skills required and help them identify the subjects or courses that they may later wish to undertake.
If the students complete the certificate programme with success (60%), they can progress to MH101 in via CAO structure.
