Overview
MSc Hydroclimatology: Water, Risk and Resilience
Climate change is transforming the global water cycle, creating growing challenges from flooding, drought and water insecurity. How can we better understand these risks and develop solutions that protect communities, ecosystems and critical infrastructure?
Maynooth University's MSc Hydroclimatology: Water, Risk and Resilience is an innovative, one-year programme designed to equip the next generation of water and climate graduates with the scientific knowledge, technical skills and practical experience needed to address these challenges.
Why study this programme?
- Develop cutting-edge, career-ready skills: Gain hands-on experience in climate and hydrological modelling, fieldwork, data collection and analysis, Remote Sensing and GIS, artificial intelligence and the latest digital technologies and how they apply to real-world water and climate challenges.
- Connect science with real-world solutions: Learn from internationally recognised researchers and engage with leading organisations and employers through practical workshops, field visits and stakeholder-led projects. Choose between a research thesis or a work placement and applied project.
- Prepare for a career in a growing global sector: Develop cutting-edge expertise in flood and drought risk, water resources, climate adaptation and resilience, opening career opportunities in environmental consultancy, government agencies, water utilities, climate services and research.
Who is this programme for?
The programme is ideal for graduates in geography, geoscience, environmental science, earth system science, hydrology, engineering, physics, mathematics, data science, policy analysis and related disciplines who want to contribute to global challenges of water and climate risk. It is equally relevant to professionals seeking to advance their careers or develop new skills in environmental management, water resources, climate adaptation and sustainability.
Combining advanced scientific training with practical experience and strong connections to employers, this MSc prepares graduates to contribute practical solutions for a more water-resilient future.
Course structure
Duration: 1 year full-time
The MSc Hydroclimatology: Water, Risk and Resilience is a one-year, full-time programme (90 ECTS) combining taught modules, practical training and independent research or professional experience. Teaching is normally concentrated across three mornings per week, providing a predictable timetable and allowing students dedicated time for independent study, practical assignments, group work and project development.
The programme comprises five compulsory modules and one optional module. Compulsory modules include; Hydroclimatology ; Applied Climate Sciences; GeoAI for Hydroclimate Risk & Resilience; Earth Science Data Analysis in Python. Optional modules include one from the following; Societal Impacts and Resilience; The Ocean and Climate Change; Paleoclimatology. A distinctive feature is our Living Labs: Research in Action module, delivered through intensive workshops, guest lectures, field visits and engagement with external organisations. Students apply their learning to real-world water and climate challenges.
Students complete the programme by choosing between two pathways:
- Work placement and applied project: Gain professional experience and apply your skills in a workplace setting.
- Research thesis: Undertake an independent research project under academic supervision, providing an excellent foundation for further research or PhD study.
The programme combines lectures, fieldwork, interactive seminars, computer-based practicals and applied learning, with strong links to researchers, employers and practitioners in the water and climate sectors.
