About this Course

The Mentoring for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion micro-credential introduces mentors to the practical steps involved in building relationships. It introduces the basic concepts of equality, diversity and inclusion and walks mentors through the interactive and participatory processes that can be used to enhance rapport and impact in dynamic mentoring relationships. Upon completion of the micro-credential the mentor will have a broader understanding of the skills associated with mentoring and communicating effectively. The course involves learners' participation in training and reflection, as well as engaging in a mentoring relationship.

Garda Vetting is not required for this programme. As a result, please note that there is no engagement with children or vulnerable adults as part of this programme.

Note: On successful completion of this micro-credential you will receive credits as per the European Credit and Transfer System. These credits are recognised by Maynooth University as credits aligned to learning completed at postgraduate level.

Course structure

Duration: 12 weeks, part-time

This course will be taught via a mixture of virtual seminars, mentoring sessions, supported reflection hours and further asynchronous learning. Students will participate in three block seminar sessions delivered virtually and supported by a tutorial session. Typically, learners will have the option to select from two time slots. Sessions will be midweek with morning or afternoon offerings. The schedule for these sessions will be made available before the course start date to enable full-time working students to plan their calendar effectively. Additionally, students will participate in formal mentoring which includes hour long mentoring sessions and reflection hours. The mentoring will be conducted via face-to-face or virtual options based on context and availability. Learners will source mentees within their current community groups or workplace to support applied learning of course objectives. There is ongoing support and contact with the tutor throughout the course.

After this micro-credential

Becoming a skilled mentor can contribute to participants personal success and career development in several domains. Mentorship can provide numerous benefits for mentors and their mentees, including cultivation of leadership skills, relationship building skills, commitment and support skills. These are transferable skills relevant to careers in the private and public sector and are specifically relevant to roles encompassing coaching roles and support work; such as managers, team leads, independent contributors looking to influence diverse actors in their teams, and educators. Graduates of the Micro-credential will also be specialised in Diversity and Inclusion, making them perfect candidates for D & I roles that are responsible for coordinating, administrating and leading Universal Diversity and Inclusion work. Graduates of the micro-credential will ultimately be able to appreciate, explore and implement best practice in equality, diversity and inclusion and mentoring within their own settings, whether this be in the public or private sector.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should hold at a minimum a 2:2 grade National Framework of Qualifications Honours (Level 8) award or an equivalent international qualification in a relevant discipline. Applicants must provide an up-to-date curriculum vitae with their application.

This course is open to experienced professionals who do not have a primary degree. Applicants who do not hold a primary or higher degree but have sufficient and relevant professional experience are also welcome to apply.
