Overview

The NUI Certificate ‘Community Work in a Changing Ireland’ is run on a periodic basis, in collaboration with suitable community-based organisations.

The NUI Certificate ‘Community Work in a Changing Ireland’ sets out to provide those with an interest in developing and/or contributing to community-based initiatives with an overview of the key aspects of community work and associated activities. Principles, processes and policy contexts locally, and nationally will be examined at a time of ongoing developments in policy and provision.


Course structure

Duration: The programme is designed to be delivered over 100 hours of contact time.

This Certificate programme is designed to enable participants to develop an appreciation of the principles and processes that underpin social inclusion and equality focused community work and to participate in, and contribute to, sustainable community work initiatives in their own communities.

The 20 ECTS Certificate programme is delivered over approximately 100 hours of contact time. The programme is delivered in a variety of ways including blocks on campus and online learning. Lectures will be used where appropriate, though the emphasis of the programme will be on experiential learning through workshops, seminars and practical assignments, with structured reflection/discussion to promote integrated learning.

Additional student effort hours include preparation for upcoming sessions, group learning and project work, as well as completion of associated continuous assessment exercises.

Many graduates of the certificate enhance their participation in, and contribution to, community work activities in their own communities and localities.

Graduates of the certificate programme are often suitable candidates to apply for professionally endorsed community work education programmes. Further details are available here.

The NUI Certificate ‘Community Work in a Changing Ireland’ has been awarded AIEB Recognition for Pre-Professional Programmes. More detail on the AIEB recognition framework is available here.

Entry Requirements

Applicants to the programme are required to be 21 or over on January 1st in the year of application.

This programme is run in in collaboration with suitable community-based organisations. Applicants will be required to have relevant experience and the support of the partnership organisation in order to take up a place on the programme.
