Overview

If you want to become a chartered engineer with an internationally recognised qualification, the MH304 Bachelor of Electronic Engineering (BE) and (optional) Master of Engineering (ME) are for you. Accredited by Engineers Ireland, students take engineering fundamentals, mathematics modules and problem-based learning projects in each year.

Problem-based learning modules help to better prepare our students to meet the challenges in modern society. Our students are given a solid grounding in:

  • effective communication
  • ethics
  • sustainable development goals
  • project delivery

If you achieve a 2.2 grade (50%) minimum in third year, you can choose the ME stream, opening up the following opportunities in fourth year - subject to availability:

  • 6-month industry work experience
  • Erasmus or study abroad
  • Research internship or project
  • Learn from our world-class experts in mobile communications, radio and wireless communications, biomedical engineering research, dynamics and control research, wave energy research, and robotics.

W.A. Barrett Scholarship in Engineering: The W.A. Barrett Scholarship in Engineering at Maynooth University was established in 2023 through the generosity of Earthridge International and the Barrett family to commemorate the late William Anthony (Tony) Barrett. The scholarship provides €3,000 to eligible first year students taking a Level 8 course that is accredited by Engineers Ireland at Maynooth University. Two scholarships are available for MH304/MH306 Engineering students.

Course structure

Duration: 4 years

In response to consultation with our industry advisory board, this programme offers Project Based learning throughout.

First & second year

  • Students take Engineering fundamentals, Programming and Mathematics modules and start their first four Problem Based Learning Projects.

Third year

  • Third year students complete a selection of taught modules and two PBL (Project Based Learning) modules. Students have two progression routes out of the programme to qualification, depending on their grade average in third year.

Fourth year

  • In fourth year students can choose from a selection of module options. Students planning to exit after fourth year complete a final year project.

Or

  • Students with a minimum of 2:2 grade (50%) in third year may complete a further 2 years to graduate with an ME in Electronic Engineering.
Work experience is available to students in the fourth year of the 5 year Masters. Students may alternatively choose Erasmus, Study Abroad or a Research Internship or Project (subject to availability).

Potential transfer pathways:
- First year MH201 Engineering Science to second year MH304
- First year MH304 BE Electronic Engineering to second year MH306 BSc Robotics & Intelligent Devices subject to passing first year and to places being available.

After Graduation

Our graduates are highly sought-after in a wide range of engineering and non-engineering roles including:

  • silicon chip manufacturing and design communications
  • in the development of products closely combining hardware and software
  • in the automotive, health, education, business and finance sectors – all of which are examples of activities now dependent on electronic engineering

Beyond electronic engineering, MH304 graduates have the software skills to work in most software companies, and the problem solving and mathematical skills for many roles in the financial, consultancy and management sectors.

Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate Applicants

Required to present 2H5 & 4O6/H7, Irish, English & a Science subject (i.e. Agricultural Science, Applied Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics, Physics with Chemistry or Technology) & H4 Mathematics.
